Recently aquired first Fox

Post by Bryan Brady »

First I wanted to say hello and thank everyone in advacnce for there help and knowledge. I have a few parkers and know a little about LC's but my knowledge of Foxs is nothing. I recently aquired a Fox gun seriel number 24358. From what I can guess its a A grade, Im guessing savage years by the safety. The original 26" barrel had the chamber blown out on the left barrel. A second set of 26" barrels are included but they are slightly off face and seem to be thin. I measured one spot that was getting close to .020. I know with the parkers .025 is aceptable but not sure what the safe limit on the foxs are. The thin set of 26" barrels are marked sterlingworth. The 30" barrels are nice and thick. They seemed to be choked full and full. They are also marked sterlingworth. It appears that the extractors on the 30" barrels are also bent slightly as they dont move too freely. The previous owners plan was the have the lug replaced on the 30" barrels with the lug off the blown up barrels. Im guessing the 30" barrels were a beavertail set because of how the bluing is worm away. There were 2 stocks included with the guun. I was told the darker stock was the original but due to the checkering right behind the reciever im guessing that stock was off a higher grade gun. I didnt see a seriel number marked anywhere on it but im not sure if Fox marked them anyways. Both stocks are cracked through the wrist.

Id like to know as much as I can about the gun and find out whats worth doing and whats not. I know I can get the woodwork fixed and refinished. Just not sure about the barrels. If you guys have any more questions feel free to ask and Ill do my best to answer them or take more pictures. Thanks again for the responses.

If someone would be kind enough to tell me how to post a picture id appreciate it. Ive been 3 days trying to figure it out and im pretty computer literate!!!

The lose stock appears to be a C-Grade stock. The seial number was usually stamped into the head of the stock. The gun itself, 24358 is basically a WW-I vintage A-Grade from around 1917 or 18.

The A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. has copies of the graded gun production cards. For $30 you could join and get one free card look up by requesting it in the Members Forum. Then you would know how the gun started life.

From looking at the pictures, unless you can do all the work youself, it appears to be a hopeless money pit to me. Even with everything done it would still be a cobbled together gun and while maybe a great shooter, not worth much in the marketplace.
