Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
Re: Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
Nice Fox for sure. If you are bound and determined to use off the shelf 2 3/4 inch ammo the 1 ounce Federal (or Estate) are probably the best choice but if you are going to do and serious high volume shooting I really recommend that you either consider the RST 2 1/2 loads or invest in some reloading equipment and load your own. There are numerous really great 1 ounce or my personal favorite 7/8th loads available from the 16 gauge reloaders group. All loads from the reloaders group are tested by Tom Armbrust or have been tested and published by reputable sources.

I'm not gonna shoot it. It's oiled and put away. I'm afraid Ill damage it.
But I would like to buy some shells that are safe for it, just in case I decide to "show it off". Where do I get the 7/8 oz shells that you like?
Thanks again

Will,
I think it would be a shame to not take your gun out and use it for the purpose it was made and purchased. If you're worried about damaging it, at least take it out for doves. Put it in a soft case and walk it to a nice shady tree line. Take it out of the case, shoot a few doves, put it back in the case and go home. Make some memories of your own with it while honoring the memory of your grandfather. I wish I was so blessed to own a family Fox.

Re: Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
Ok, here comes some more newbie questions.
What are the differences between shells. RST has several different versions with several different oz's,etc. What do all those mean? I apologize for my ignorance but I'm trying to learn.
Thanks again

Re: Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
16-Ga-2-1/2-Paper-Lite-Vel-1100-7/8-oz-
16 GA = self explanatory
2 1/2 = The overall length of the fired (empty) hull
Paper Lite = RST proprietary name for the load
Vel 1100 = Load muzzle velocity 1100 fps
7/8 oz = Shot charge weight
As an aside the slower the muzzle velocity and lighter the charge weight the less the recoil will be.

Re: Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
Thank you for the clarification.
Which loads are best for dove? Or as a whole are they all ok for five as log as its 8 shot?

Re: Newbie with Questions about my fox/pictures inside
I prefer 7 1/2 shot for the extra retained energy provided by the larger shot. I have just seen too many birds hit by 8 shot fly off to die unrecovered.
Any of the RST 2 1/2 loads listed will work well.

Nice looking Sterly!
If properly cleaned (not too much oil) and stored, the steel and wood are as strong as the day the gun was made. Which, since this is a Fox, is very strong. It would be a shame not to put this gun back into regular hunting service.
I have a 16ga Sterly that was restocked by the previous owner for a custom fit. It is my main hunting and sporting clays gun, and I have put many many boxes of modern ammo through it, including about 8 boxes of Fiocchi Golden Pheasant which is a very stiff load, with no problems.
I think it is human nature to feel that something becomes fragile with age. But, this is not true for metal and wood, and especially not true for a Fox shotgun.
