Info needed

Post by prsumner »

I recently bought a Fox Sterlingworth shotgun. I Don't know much about them yet, but I have been trying to learn. I mailed Mr. Callahan the serial number yesterday to see when the shotgun was made and any other info he can come across. The serial number is 85226 most of the guns I have seen online have been in the 50000 range. Anyone know much about the 85000 serial numbers? Also I think the stock has had some issues, seems like there is a though bolt above the trigger on both sides. I am going to try and attach a picture. Thanks in advance.

Welcome. Your gun was made in 1919 and someone did a rather poor job fixing a crack in the stock. Bolt is used to hold the cheeks in place. Typically they will put a dowel rod in and try to match it up to the wood and blend it in. There are other ways also of stapling the head also. If it were me and everything else was solid about the gun I would probably just send the gun out and have the bolt replaced with a dowel and cleaned up. Then figure out if the chambers are original or if they have been lengthened. Buy some shells accordingly and enjoy the gun.

The topic below this one has a couple of gunsmiths listed for stock repair. PGS gunsmith. Keith kearcher are a couple more you might want to call or try. I don't know what part of the country you are located but you might find something local.
