Re-stocking gunsmith referral

Post by HardCash »

I'm considering re-stocking my 1st Fox, a Sterlingworth, because the drop is very severe and I'd like a beautiful piece of wood.. SInce I live in Missouri, I am only several hours from Lincoln, MO where Wenig is located.
However, I didn't know if there was a general consensus on a stockmaker specifically for Foxes. The gun is being deliveried today to Dewey Vicknair to have the shotgun shell rims deepen, because RST will not seat flush, and restore the receiver. I don't want to restock this shotgun until I shot it and played with the dimensions.
Does anyone have a recommendation ?

Before you send it off to be restocked I recommend that you take the time and effort to have a professional fitting. Here in the great plains states Michael Murphy located in Augusta Kansas has done hundreds of fittings. As far as stockers you do have two of the better stockers in Winigs and Show Me gun stocks in your home state. If you need any restoration or general gunsmith work Buck Hamlin is located in Pevely MO. he does great work ondouble guns.

Buck is a craftsman of the old school. I don't think he owns a computer. He once told me that reading forums, responding to questions and answering e-mails would only keep him from his work (which he has plenty of).

Buck's mailing address is:
Buck Hamlin
8501 Cedar Trail
Pevely, MO 63070

His phone number is (636) 479-4304

It will probably be a while before you get your gun back from Dewey. :D

Restore the receiver? What is wrong with a receiver that would need restoring?

Buck Hamlin will almost certainly not restock your SW... he is a GREAT gun smith and has worked on more than a few of my Fox guns when I lived not far from him but he has little to no interest in restock projects at this point and seems to only occasionally take them on what he personally deems a very interesting project or for an old, dear customer. I would highly recommend Buck for any other gunsmithing/refinishing work... well worth the drive over to see him in person and have a nice chat. Super guy.

For a few stock, I would consider Wenigs or Show Me but would also consider just sending it out to any number of other smiths outside of MO. Wenigs could be a good option for having a duplicate made prior to shipping to your smith also...
Cheers!
