Boy am I glad that hunting season is coming back around! I had a great day on Saturday out at Beaver Pond in Snow Camp, NC for their opening day hunt. I got there around 10:00 in the morning, and the pig cookers were going, cooking up a fantastic lunch. I headed up to the five stand and shot a few rounds with my new XE/C Grade Fox. Fellow AHFCA member Alan Love was running the five stand, and we made up an interesting and challenging menu for me. My second round with the XE I shot 18 out of 25, with a single followed by all true pairs at each station. Needless to say, I'm in love with this gun. Lunch was served around eleven, and I spent the rest of the afternoon shooting my XE on the five stand and catching up with friends. We hit the field around 4:00, and the birds really started flying about an hour later. Since I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet either, I decided to take my new 28" 16ga Sterlingworth Deluxe out for a spin in the fields. It proved to be every bit the gun I thought it would, and helped me bag 13 birds.
After spending most of today in my garage moving cabinets to make room for the reloading bench I'm getting ready to build, I went back out to Beaver Pond for a few hours this afternoon. I planned to hunt with the XE today, but the Thunderstorms were terrible on the way out, and I didn't feel like getting caught in the rain with that gun. I took the Sterlingworth back out instead, but we only bagged three this afternoon. I saw plenty of birds after the rain died down, just not flying in my direction. Regardless, it was great to shoot my new guns, and to be out hunting again.
