16ga hammer doesn't always strike hard enough?

Post by chesterhyde »

I have a 16 ga sterlingworth. the hammer on the back trigger doesn't always strike hard enough. I have dis-assembled and cleaned and oiled but it still happens every 20-30 shots? Any ideas?

Have you tried different brand shells? Your gun could have excessive headspace and cause shell not to fire or rim cut on extractor could be cut too deeply. Bobby

Weak mainspring or firing pin nose too short.

You're not using Remington shells are you? I had this same issue with my Fox 16 gauge gun shooting Remmington ammunition. I can recall at least one other poster on this forum besides me who had the same issue with a sixteen and Remmington shells, and in both cases switching solved the problem. I was getting misfires in one barrel and sporadically, as you described. Remington or not, try a different brand of shells and see if it still happens. I shot several boxes of Federal after that without a single issue.

SmithShady,

Agreed!

I have a Winchester M23 Heavy Duck that would sometimes not fire Remington brand ammo. Other brands always fired.
