I need info on how the checkering and pattern should look on my "A" 12 ga. sn# 260xx. Pictures would be great, as well as a detailed description.
Also, I am in need of a correct butt plate. Is this one correct?

If anyone has a nice one in for sale that is correct, please let me know.
Thanks.

Re: "A" Fox stock checkering & buttplate question
Semper,
Your 270XX vintage A grade should look similar to the one pictured below, SN 319XX, which shows the checkereing pattern and the butt plate.
This gun has a half pistol grip or sometimes called a Prince of Wales grip or round knob. My guess is most A grades have the 1/2 pistol grip but if it does have a capped, full pistol grip, it likely would be a plain Sterlingworth style cap with no markings or lettering. The butt plate should have the "Ring" around both mounting holes.
Original Ringed Hole butt plates are not very common. A plain style would probably be suitable on a restocked gun if you can't find the correct one.
I don't have better foto's of the checkering pattern that's handy. What other "detailed description" are you looking for?
What part of WNY are you in?
Jolly

Re: "A" Fox stock checkering & buttplate question
I am having the gun restocked. The checkering appears to be flat vs. pointed- is this true, or is the checkering just worn down?
Also, were there different patterns/spacing of checkering, and what should my era gun be?
Thanks.

Semperdog,
The checkering is not pointed on the late style A's. If I had a better close up picture, I would copy it to your post.
And your gun with SN 26XXX would likely have been made in the mid 1920's +/-.
