A Garde question Barrel Steel

Post by Brian »

I have a first year 20 Ga A Grade. It has Chromox barrels. They are numbered to the gun, numbers look right, no overstamps, no other flunky looking signs of renumbering. They have Fox proofs on them also. Did Fox offer Chromox as an option or even introduce it at this time. SN 2000XX.

The first merntion of Chromox was in the little brochure introducing the smallbores that A.H. Fox Gun Co. put out, likely given out at their first showing at the 1911 Grand American Handicap. Early smallbore Ansley H. Fox doubles seem to appear with equal frequency with Chromox as with Krupp. I started collecting data on early smallbores some years ago. The very earliest Fox smallbores appear to be Chromox, then it launches into a period where it is a toss up Krupp or Chromox.
