Obsessed with Doubles wrote:I was just offered a 16g with 32" bbls.
It's a 1934 gun. Seller said it was it very good, all original shape, with lots of finish. They all say this, though.
Also said it was an extractor gun.
What kind of $ premium would you place on the 32" bbls?
Thanks

Congradulations on finding a 16 gauge with 32 inch barrels. Had I found it there would be a certified check in the mail at any price below $2,500.00 if it were in just average condition.
I have been watching the various auction and other sale sights for a number of years now and have never seen a 16 of 20 gauge Sterlingworth with 32 inch barrels offered at any price and damn few 12 gauges for that matter.
I just wanted to bring this thread back around. 32" SW guns, for the most part seem to fit the pattern of a zero in the hundreth's digit of the S/N. Dave add one more to you list . SN 117070. non ejector Bores are .730 and choke constrictions are .045" #2 weight. I wonder if there were other patterns for 30" or 26" Or ejector vs extractor???
The zero in the hundreds place in the serial number does appear in the nine 32-inch barrel 12-gauge Sterlingworths I have recorded, but I have 26-, 28- and 30-inch Sterlingworths recorded with a zero in that position as well. All of the 32-inch barrel 12-gauge Sterlingworths I have recorded are smooth hinge pin Philadelphia guns. The only 12-gauge 32-inch Utica guns I've recorded are the eight Fox-Sterlingworth Wildfowls in the 1341xx range. I have one The Sterlingworth Co. gun recorded that the owner claimed lettered as a 32-inch gun, but currently sported 30-inch barrels?!?
Dave, add # 122030 to your list of 32" SWs. This is a Utica Fox Sterlingworth extractor. Bores are .728 with chokes of .032/.045. Barrels are not marked but most likely are #2s.
Here are some photos of red headed Lucy. Sorry for the poor quality but Photobucket is fubared and I had to take some new photos in my hellishly hot shop tonight. I'm now using the hunt101 site for anyone interested in an alternative to Photobucket.
The barrels had been blued and the stock refinished before I purchased her but she has some pretty nice wood for a sterly. She had an illegitimate pad on her which I replaced with a NOS Hawkins.
Barrel flats do have the SP stamp but not the U as seen on many Utica guns. Maybe this U was stamped on later Utica guns? Chokes are 3 1/2" in length if I remember correctly. Chambers are 2 5/8 best I can tell.
I've not hunted with her but for SCs she is a close shooting, hard hitting gal.
Thanks Mike. That certainly streches out the transition range. All the guns I've recorded in the 123xxx to the low 128xxx range are Philadelphia guns. In the 128xxx range I start getting Utica guns intermixed. The first appearance of SPECIAL ALLOY -- FORGED STEEL barrels I have is in the 132xxx range. But, STERLINGWORTH FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL markings continue to appear from time to time to nearly the end.
I've got the same situation in 20-gauge guns. The general transition Philadelphia to Utica is in the 262xxx range, but I have a 30-inch barrel Utica gun in the 259xxx range recorded.
Dave, thanks for the info. Maybe the barrels/frame were buried/misplaced, in the white, then found when the move to Utica happened & finished there? We'll probably never know for sure but this is another interesting twist to the history.
This gun has chambers much tighter than my other Foxes. Perhaps the reamer was sharpened one too many times? Anyone else notice this on a 32" sterly?
I've not ordered a letter on the gun, need to, but before I throw $30 out the window has anyone ordered one and how much info was in the letter? Worth the expense?
