Different checkering on forearms
Different checkering on forearms
Why do some Sterlys have a diamond shaped pattern on the forend and others have like a meshed double diamond. I thought it had to do with Philly and Utica, but I'v e seen both styles on both guns.

Re: Different checkering on forearms
As far as I know, these are the checkering patterns for Philadelphia and early Utica forearms below and later Utica forearms above --

Anything else,I'd find suspect. Show us pictures of what you are talking about.

Re: Different checkering on forearms
Being a guy who specializes in returning American doubles back to specs, I think there is a noted difference in the patterns through the years. I think forend 1 & 2 are an ejector and non ejector Savage forends, and 3 & 4 are ejector and non ejector Philly forends. Am I correct on this? Thanks much, Jerry

Re: Different checkering on forearms
That is sort of what I was trying to say Jake. Savage didn't go to the bulky forearms right away. Savage continued to use the trimmer Philadelphia shaped forearms with the double diamond pattern to maybe 1934? I don't know of any other factory original checkering patterns for Sterlingworth slim forearms than the four I pictured. If you know of any others, show us some pictures.

Re: Different checkering on forearms
I have some funky beavertails which I know for a fact are correct factory forends but as for splinters, I think what you have pictured here are the four that were offered. Jake

Re: Different checkering on forearms
This picture includes my only Fox-Sterlingworth beavertail. In this case for a 16-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth DeLuxe Ejector Field from 1936 --

The other forearms are for a 16-gauge Sterlingworth Ejector Field from 1928, and a 1937 12-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Ejector Skeet & Upland Game Gun.

Re: Different checkering on forearms
Almost breathtaking picture, Tom. I know you said you really like beavertails, but the splinter on the one in the foreground is a beauty, and it looks like another on the round knob gripped third from the rear. I love those ebony inlays on the graded splinters. I've got a beavertailed BSS I would "consider" swapping for either of them.

Re: Different checkering on forearms
Yeah Stan, a couple of splinters did sneak in there. Must have been I was focusing on the Kautzkys that day rather than the b/ts.
