12 ga Chamber Length

A question has come up on chamber length in 12 ga guns. Did Fox make 12's with 2 5/8 inch chambers? If so, when did they go to the 2 3/4 inch chamber? The question is particularly about a 1922 Sterlingworth. Thanks.

My 12 ga. 1912 A grade 2 barrel set has 2 3/4" chambers in both sets and are original. Strangely enough, my 1921 AE 20 ga. has 2 1/2" chambers. I don't know of a cutoff date when the chambers were standardized at 2 3/4". These guns could be had in anything even to 3" by order, although I think Fox built more 2 3/4" guns in the early 1900's than the rest of the manufacturers of American doubles. I think the weight of barrels ordered may have had some influence on what length chambers the factory would provide due to barrel wall thickness constraints. I'm sure one of the other Fox boys have better info and I don't recall seeing anything in McIntosh's book in that regard. Lee.
