"Bo Whoop", Julia Auction Catalog is online
"Bo Whoop" and James D. Julia's description of it is now available online, Lot #1171. There are several other Foxes available, too.

Re: "Bo Whoop", Julia Auction Catalog is online
Well, that's the story and there it is and for all to see! The question of title seems to have been settled and with Jim Julia's unconditional guarantee. I was in jim Kelly's shop this afternoon (he is restoring a 4 bore E.M. Reilly hammergun that I recently purchased). Phil Watkins, Jim's stockmaker, and Ward Buffkin, another of Jim's gunsmiths, made pictures of the new stock and Bo Whoop as the new stock was being made. I predict that the final sales price will exceed $300,000. In any event it will be interesting.

Mr. Landers,
Does anyone know when the current owner of Buckingham's no. 1 gun (the gun up for auction at James D. Julia's) became aware (month and year) that the firearm he possessed was the famous original "Bo Whoop" No. 1 gun that was lost by Nash on December 1, 1948? And do you know when the announcement went public or was first heard of this particular find? It certainly sounds and looks like this was Nash's beloved No.1.
Respectfully,
Snipe Flats

Snipe Flats,
George was the first person to actually report, on the internet, seeing and handling the gun after Jim Kelly made the discovery. He may know the date that the gun was taken to Kelly for restocking, I don't remember. I examined the gun in October of last year, a little over a month before the owner sent it to Julia's for the upcoming auction. I was asked not to disclose who the owner was when I examined it last year, and didn't. They were a bit apprehensive that there might be a break-in and burglary if it became known where it was. I chose not to say anything about seeing the gun, until after Julia's received it and made the public announcement about it, especially after the way George was belittled after he told of seeing it. Jim Kelly was the first to tell the owner what he had. Owner had never heard of Nash or Bo Whoop, not being much of a gun enthusiast.

George, I appreciate your remembering that I did not give you a hard time, actually tried to set up a meeting with you at the Vintagers that year to discuss the situation. After our unsuccessful attempt to meet, you kindly sent me information on Bo Whoop, of course leaving out information about the owner. I think we're still on the same wavelength. See you at the Southern, I hope. We hang out at the Smith-Parker challenge venue a lot, as well as at the PGCA and Fox Collectors tables. Please look me up. Bill Murphy

George I owe you an apology. You visited our booth in 2008 at the Vintagers and told me about Bo-Whoop. I was very skeptical because you said you had pictures but didn't bring them with you. Without some proof I figured there is no way but I should have given a Southern Gentleman more credit. Craig

Hello Bill: I do plan to be at the Southern and I will look you up. Perhaps we can share lunch with Craig and Jim Kelly.
Craig: No problem! I would have had my doubts too if at that time someone walked up to me and said that they had seen & handled "The Lost Ark" of Foxdom. I hope to see you at the Southern & by then we should know the outcome.
Best Regards, George

Thank you for the information. I'm sure anyone, like George, who would make the first annoucement about "Bo Whoop"being found would have been suspect.
Here is some additional information for you all.
Dr. William Andrews, hunting partner for 14 years or so with Buckingham contacted me in February, 2005 to say Buck's No. 1 gun was found. A caller said they have found the gun at an Illinois pawn shop and payed $1,000 for it. They knew Dr. Andrews had Buck's second gun and wanted to know the value of the first gun. After having the caller describe the gun, he said the gun was maybe worth three times what he sold Buck's second gun for, which was $100,000. Dr. Andrews offered to contact Mr. Dunavant, the person who he sold Buck's no. 2 gun. The caller said to go ahead. After several days, Dr. Andrews, not able to reach Dunavant, decided to make an offer. When Dr. Andrews returned the call, he was informed that the gun had been sold to a Pennsylvania coal mine executive who wanted to remain anonymous.
Dr. Andrews told me that the caller detailed things about the no. 1 gun that most people would not know.
This was the last conversation I had with Dr. Andrews for he died a few months later.
Respectfully,

Mr. Snipe Flats, your story of where Bo Whoop was found is not the same as that being told by Julia Auctions.
Goodbye Mandy, once in a life time hunting dog. I miss you every day.

Re: "Bo Whoop", Julia Auction Catalog is online
I heard the story Snipe Flats recounts back at that time, but nothing more came of it?!? Internet rumor? What was the serial number of that gun? If it is 33059, there is no way it is BoWhoop. Someone sent me pictures of 33059 and photocopies of the card, about the same time the story Snipe Flats recounts was making the rounds.

I didn't see anyone mention on any threads about the information I shared regarding Dr. Andrew's comments on this site. What is interesting to me, is that after so many years Dr. Andrews received this call sometime before February 2005, and no others similiar to it. The timing seems awful coincidental.
Dr. Andrews never mentioned a serial number for the gun; just the information that I shared with you all.
And as far as Julia Auctions is concerned, Dr. Andrews shared this information with me long before anyone or I knew about their story. I'm just relating what I was told by the person that was considered by Nash to be, "The son that I never had".

Snipe Flats, Do you think the gun Julia's has up for auction is Bo Whoop number one?

Snipe Flats: To answer your earlier question, I'm sure that Jim Kelly knows the present owner but was asked not to divulge it. The letter from Callahan had the adressee's name removed. I believe that this was done more out of fear of theft rather than any attempt to conceal the present owner's name.

Re: "Bo Whoop", Julia Auction Catalog is online
Although I'm not a gun collector I've been following the forum thread BO Whoop and can attest to the character of the owner. I am a close personal friend and have known the family for 50 years. I have seen and handled Bo Whoop on at least two separate occasions, although, I didn't know the value of he gun at either time. The last time was in 2006 not long after the stock was repaired. The owner related the same story to me then as has been printed on this forum. To say the least the family has hit upon some difficult times and hopefully the sale of Bo Whoop will go a long way towards solving a lot of their financial difficulties.
