What Ammo to use?
What Ammo to use?
Hi all, I just perchased a 12gauge 2and3/4 A.H.Fox Sterlingworth circa 1926, and have never shot it yet, and was wondering what kind of ammo to use? I know theres a ton of different kind of ammo out there and wanted to know what would be the best kind for this gun, in terms of not messing up the insides of the barrels. Is there any brand of ammo that is popular with Fox Sterlingworth?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: What Ammo to use?
Before shooting ANY ammo be sure to get your Fox checked out by a competent professional. Many of the folks shooting classic Foxes are using RST shells. Moderate pressure and strain on the gun. Made for side by side shooters by side by side shooters. Yep, they're more expensive than regular high pressure ammo but how many shells are you really gonna shoot? Silvers

Re: What Ammo to use?
Thank you for your advise, I bought it from a gun store that checks all their guns out before they sale them, and they guarentee the guns is in fireing condition, but i did go the extra step to check the saftey of the gun and took it to another gun store to have it checked. Thank you for your concern Silver. I dont plan on using it to often maybe twice a year about 50 cartridges a year, but I do like the idea of chosing ammo that will not be to ruff on the gun, and that would extend the life of the gun. What type of metal bbs are safe and easy on the gun? (steel, antimony..) What type bbs does RST ammo come in? Thanks

Re: What Ammo to use?
Fox guns were designed for regular lead shot. Equivalent soft shot like bismuth or NICE shot may be used. Steel and similar hard non-tox are DEFINITELY OUT. I've been at the RST loading plant and have seen many tons of Eagle, Lawrence and West Coast brand lead shot there in storage. They also load NICE non-tox for those who want to do waterfowling with older side by sides. RST has and is experimenting with another soft non-tox shot but that's just in the prototyping phase at present.

if i cant find RST shells at my gun store, are there any other type of ammo brands that I should consider?
Thanks

Re: What Ammo to use?
I've used Winchester's low recoil/low noise loads in my 12 ga Foxes but some of my guns don't like these shells and are hard to open after firing. I'm convinced the firing pins are sticking in the primers. I pick mine up at the local wallyworld.
Silver's advise to use RST shells, or Polywad shells, is dead on. You can always call either company and order them shipped to your front door.

Re: What Ammo to use?
I had a problem with a gun not wanting to open after shooting some clay pigeons. After the gun cooled it functioned properly. Perhaps it was the firing pins or an accumulation of 90 years of "gunk" inside the gun? Has anyone else had a similar problem or found a solution? Thanks
