I'll take a 2nd gen Gough style gun every day of the week.....90% of the time....there are a few exceptions.

Re: early guns vs. late guns
I personally like the mor floral and fine engraving of the earlier guns than the deep engraving of the 2nd gen but then I have never owned a second gen engraved Fox... besides the engraving... generically speaking the fit and finish went down hill over time... there was an interesting article in DBJ showing the differences in filing and fitting... as always, there are exceptions... seems I remember reading a different article talking aobut possibly some of the last 7 Savage era guns being some of the nicest ever produced????
Cheers!

While every gun must be judged on its own merits, generally speaking the earlier the gun, the better the fit and finish and the better the quality of wood grade for grade. A B-/BE-Grade smallbore in the 1913-style engraving is pretty sweet. Wish I had one!

In the mid range, my favorite early style is the C, in the late style the B is very nice. Truth be told I like em all
