Baker Sterling SBT gun

Post by Silvers »

I want to share some pics of a nice straight grip Baker Sterling SBT gun that came to me via a good friend. She dates to about 1916-17. 32” tube with almost 6” of full tapered choke, 36 thou constriction. Stock dimensions are: 1-3/8 by 2 by 14-5/8” over a vintage Jostam pad. She’ll be out on the trap fields once they open up this spring but meanwhile I’ll warm her up doing sporting clays single birds on call. Love to see the birds turn into diesel smoke. :D

Then we have our W C Letterman SBT event at the Northeast SxS. My Emmons Fox J-Grade SBT shoots just fine but maybe this year I'll try the Baker ……. :)

That wood is stunning Frank and only highlighted by the straight grip. I have to move closer to you and hang out when you go shopping. I'd just be happy with the ones you turn down. :) Very, very nice.

we had a discussion not long ago about Baker's place in the hierarchy of American gun makers

viewtopic.php?f=46&t=9458&p=59306&hilit=baker#p59306

this trap gun is one of those examples that should leave no doubt to their qualification as one of the best makers

thanks for sharing it Frank

Great looking example Frank. I have had the itch for vintage single barrel traps lately and just picked up a Baker Sterling myself. 32" barrel with straight grip. Mine has the latch forend fastener. And an aftermarket adjustable recoil pad that I would like to replace. Will try to get some pictures taken soon.

The 100+ year old ejector spring was a bit wimpy and I replaced it with one from my parts bin, cut to length. Original spring is on the right. The Baker now throws Federal paper hulls about 8 feet and Remington Gun Clubs a little farther.

I had the her out today and did pretty well on sporting clays singles once I found out she shot almost flat versus way high as I'd anticipated. 44 ex 50 with Federal paper reloads, 1-ounce of 7-1/2's ahead of 700-X powder, about 1200 speed. Talk about diesel smoke on the closer targets. :D

One of the guys commented, the Baker looked good standing next to that Perazzi.

Nice attention to detail with those Fed papers and nice shooting. I think your Baker made that Perazzi look good; added a touch of class to the gun rack if you will. :) I'm with Mike. I just might git me one of them fancy SBT's.
