A Grade serial number 104 (pics are up)

This forum is to be used to post A.H. Fox Gun parts and pieces from orphaned guns you own or you are searching for. This forum is NOT to be used to sell ANYTHING including complete guns or gun parts. This forum is NOT a marketplace but a bulletin board. All contacts between individuals are to be made through the forum PM system. No prices are to be posted. The main intent here is to marry parts with the original gun and to celebrate that reunion.

A Grade serial number 104 (pics are up)

Post by Coup d'etat »

Greetings to all. I have joined this forum in order find more information regarding a receiver and butt stock that I "saved" from a trash can. An old-timer gun smith decided to retire and started throwing away parts guns, everything from bolt-actions Mausers and hunting rifles, to shotguns and pistols. I could not read the manufacturer until I got home and used a magnifying glass. What I have is a complete receiver, with triggers and firing pins, internal lock action, and safety. The butt is highly figured walnut with a half pistol grip, nicely checkered. It has the original butt plate (black hard rubber). Basically I have "half" of a side-by-side shotgun. I am missing the barrels and fore end.

The serial number is 104 on the tang and on the flat near the firing pins. The last patent date is 1905. Next to the serial number is the letter "A". On the sides is "Ansley H. Fox". The receiver is fully engraved as are the screws. The mechanicals seem to be in excellent, if somewhat dirty condition. This piece needs to be completely restored. I feel that it would be an excellent candidate for restoration.

I will post pics tomorrow as my account had just been approved and it is night already. I understand that that there is to be no selling what so ever on this forum, but I came here to see if someone could use this piece for whatever reason. I have no need for it, and I will end up selling it through other venues. With that being said, please send me a PM if you have any questions.

If I have already broken the rules I ask for your forgiveness. I am not a collector of high-end shotguns. I am a military C&R collector so I am definitely out of comfort zone here.

Cheers, Coup (Allan)

Hi Allan,

Thanks for hopping on and posting about your find. Usually when someone posts about a three digit serial number gun, it ends up being a Philadelphia Arms Company gun ( pre-cursor to the A.H. Fox gun). If it has Ansley's name on the side though, then you've got a VERY early A Grade Fox. We would all love to see pictures of it!

As for selling it, I think you are going about it the correct way. Paying members can post guns for sale in the Members Forum on this site, but not in the open forums like this one. We do always appreciate the heads up if someone is planning to sell a Fox on another site. Mentioning where it will be for sale is ok, as long as no pricing or direct links to the sale are posted.

Thanks and Welcome!

Mike

Greetings again. I have pics, but this forum does not have a pic upload feature that I can find. Looks like I will have to find a pic host and use simple HTML and link it? That's a lot of work. Any suggestions as to how to get pics on this site? Easily?

That's pretty much the only way to do. I like Picturetrail.com because it seems to have less virus then some of the others. Photobucket is one giant spam site from what I've encountered.

Hi Allan,

If you don't have an account set up already on one of the photo sharing sites, it would be a hassle to create one just to post these pictures. If you want to email some photos to me, I'd be happy to post them in this thread for you. Let me know and I'll PM you my email address.

Thanks,

Mike

The receiver is fully engraved as are the screws.
Early A-Grades are far from "fully engraved". Here are a couple of pictures of serial number 106 --

I have an early A grade and it is probably the most well built gun I own. I want to get some more early Foxes eventually in B and C grades

I have a 1913 A grade with 3" chambers and 32" barrels. Agree with Mills, a well built gun. Restocked, but a nice gun for shooting/hunting.
