PA Grouse hunting
The 20 ga. Sterlingworth is serving me well. This is my third grouse for the season and the 2nd for the Fox.

Nice picture. Because the “band” on the tail is incomplete, is this a female? Is this a young bird? Or is that an old wives tale?

Re: PA Grouse hunting
Great picture with the King of upland birds, thanks for sharing. Do you feel the grouse #'s are up this year in your part of PA?
Thanks,
Stan

What is your barrel length and chokes in that SW? What ammo? Thanks for posting the picture of your success.
Owning a Fox is not a spectator sport.

Re: PA Grouse hunting
Jeff,
It is a young bird. I think the shorter central tail feathers indicate a young bird, not sex. The varation in band color is not a good indication of sex. Males usually have longer tail feathers, but this is not always true. The spots on the upper rump feathers can also be used to determine sex, 2 or 3 spots indicate a male, one or none indicate a female.

Re: PA Grouse hunting
Stan, I think the numbers are up a little from last year. There seem to be more young birds then we have see the past few years. We finally got a good hatch, which is what we need to rebuild the population.

The barrels are 28" and chokes are ic and mod. I use Game Bore and RST ammo.DarylC wrote:What is your barrel length and chokes in that SW? What ammo? Thanks for posting the picture of your success.

Re: PA Grouse hunting
Thanks grouse fan for posting. I like your user name, a good play on words. Both ammo choices are great; when out for grouse with my favorite 20b Fox in mixed cover I'll usually have a RST 1125 speed 7-1/2 in the right and a Gamebore 7 in the left.
Sounds like you're finding some grouse in your area. Too many leaves still on trees last week here in northeast PA but the wind over the weekend and today's rain should set things up for me later this week.

The leaves came down earlier then normal here.
Grouse numbers are decent.
