Rabbit Hunting in the 1940's

Dear Fox Nation,

Searching some old photo's I came across four that told a story of my father, my uncle Leo and their friend Irving La Prade. Back in the 1940's the three men used beagle hounds that they tied the cages in the trunks of their cars and drove from Providence, RI to the areas of Tiverton, Middletown and Newport in Rhode Island. They have passed away a long time ago in my life and Irving La Prade''s son Arthurs life. Arthur and I have hunted together and shot together for many a year. Our Sons Joe Burke and Aron La Prade have also shot together. Arthurs Dad used a Fox Savage 410 Ga. double barrel 26" bbl. My uncle Leo used an A.H. Fox 16 Ga. A-GRADE 26" bbl. and my Dad used a 16 Ga. Sterlingworth 28" bbl. They all loved to hunt and eat rabbits they harvested from the ocean communities of Newport, Middletown and Tiverton, RI. Only my dad Edward Burke lived long enough to tell me the stories. Now you know why I have such a collection of Fox Shotguns.

Great photos of days gone by; love 'em. My family wasn't much for picture taking so I don't have any hunting pics of my dad, etc. back in the day. Something I regret deeply.

Hy Guy's

My Buddy Artie may have some more pictures of our dads hunting with the dogs. If he can get them to me I'll post them. The picture of the 4 guns was from the 1950's in our home.
The second from the top was Dad's 16 Ga. Sterly which was stolen in 1973.

Thanks for posting. It brought back times when I would tag along with my Dad in the middle 40s. I was 5 years old and carried the rabbits . HE used a 12 bore SW. . He let my uncle use at one time and never got it back' Sure wish I had it

Brian, as others have said thanks for the memories of cottontails and rabbit dogs. One in particular popped from my memory bank yesterday. Back when I was kid fluorescent coloring hadn't been invented and the safety norm here in PA was for your wife or Mom to sew a large piece of red fabric onto the back of your small game or deer coat. Presumably you didn't need it up front because you could see and call out to alert hunters in front. So, my maternal Grandmother gave me my late Grandfather's small game jacket which for some reason didn't have the red cloth attached. Maybe he used it for ducks? One of my uncles who then lived in NC had sent home about a dozen Nazi flags from when he served with Gen Clark's army in Italy, and they and other souvenirs were in foot lockers in our attic. You guessed it; this 13 year old rabbit hunter cut one of those flags apart and Mom sewed a large red piece on that jacket. I can only guess what that flag would be worth today. Some day I'll be catching up with my late uncle and fess up. :(

Frank, I'm sure that your uncle is smiling down upon you now as he probably did when your were a teen hunting. After all you took something that represented a lot of pain and suffering to so many
to something that offered you safety and protection while you hunted a young man. Thanks for your memory. Brian
