Re: Which finish is best?
I have a jar of this and have used this a couple times usually on touch up or small jobs, but like you said, thin coats. I do like linseed also, but it does take awhile to dry. Touch ups are easily blended in with existing finish for sure, that's what I like. I think I'm having trouble with my stock...

Re: My first Fox- Sterlingworth 16
Very nice, are you going to hunt it? I've owned my Stery 16 maybe 16 yrs. now. Ejectors, 28" barrels IC and Mod. Refinishing the stock myself. I didn't like the job the guy did on mine after 10 yrs. of looking at it. Got some great tips from "bbman" a fellow member. I'll post pics whe...

Re: found fox
Great find! I think I'll start snooping around in my dad's closet! My grandfather had a graded Fox and nobody knows what happened to it. We think he traded it for a Gibson banjo.

Re: 2 1/2 vs 2 3/4 shell?
Mike. I didn't see what gauge you were shooting, but we've been loading 3/4 ounce for our 20s and 7/8 ounce for the 12s. The PSIs are 5600-9000 and the FPSs are anywhere from 950-1200. They pattern nicely and do drop the birds. I load 2 1/2 .410s with 1/2 ounce or less. Have never patterned them, bu...

Re: Restocked Sterlingworth 20 Gauge Ejector
Bobby, I took the 000steel wool pad to my "shinny" stock and started over. Great tip, 1 coat and it already looks promising. I wanted to ask, after rubbing the oil on, do you allow it to sit for a few minutes or rub it off right after it's applied? Thanks again for all your helpful tips! C...

Re: Restocked Sterlingworth 20 Gauge Ejector
Thanks Bobby, that's the Dembart's oil you're talking about? Maybe that's what I was doing wrong. Do I need to steel wool in between or just apply and wipe each coat? I really like that gun you restocked. I was wondering how the Dembart's holds up as a finish? Thanks again for all your help. I wish ...

Re: Which finish is best?
I've used an "Antique Finish" made by MinWax, and maybe it's the age of the can, but it did tack up rather quickly. I found this hard to work with around checkering. I checker or recut and mask off the area and then start sanding or rubbing in the finish. The MinWax started raising the tap...

Re: Which finish is best?
I forgot to define "Best". I guess that would be somewhere between "Original Look" and a "Durable Original" look. I use my guns to hunt and the stocks see a lot of sweat. I wasn't sure if the Dembart's checkering oil would hold up to the extremes.

Re: Which finish is best?
Amen Silvers! I do prefer an original finish myself. I bought this gun 12 yrs. ago and shot it until I noticed a crack below the upper tang on the right side. I was referred to someone to have it fixed. He pointed out other cracks around the fore end's ejectors. I've seen his work prior and ask him ...

Re: Which finish is best?
Thank you, this Timberluxe looks easy and impressive. I'm curious of the oil it contains. My stock is done but a bit on the glossy side. I think we will lightly steel wool with 0000 and shoot a couple coats of the Brownell's Gun Savr on it and tone it down. This product in this heat of AZ. dries fas...

Which finish is best?
Excuse my ignorance, I'm fairly new to the forum and sometimes post in the wrong place. I've been refinishing my SW 16 for some time now and should have finished by now. Seems it's either too dry or too glossy. I took the advice of a member and tried the Dembart's, sanded and rubbed in. I had the st...

Re: Restocked Sterlingworth 20 Gauge Ejector
I've been working on my SW 16 and trying to come up with a low sheen finish. Took the advice of a member and tried the Dembart oil. Seems to have a little gloss to it, if I rub it on thin I get dry spots. I sanded lightly first and left the previous finish on as a filler. Had the gun refinished 8 yr...

Re: What's a solid model for a grouse gun?
I've owned my 16 and 12 Sterlys for years now and have taken many quail and dove. After shooting the 12 the 16 feels like I'm carrying a .410 in the field. It's IC and M and it's my choice over any LC or Parker for an upland hunter. I hunt with a lot of guys with pretty guns and mine shoots as good ...
