Re: Hammer Stirrips

Good Idea! I will give that a try. Those springs make things tough on the ol fingers. Yeah I pulled a longer stirrup out of my 16. Jason Barden sent me an extra set of short stirrups just in case. He's a good guy to do business with, great turn around times and very helpful. Thanks again Bobby. Oh y...

Re: Hammer Stirrips

I'll check that out when I have the receiver in front of me. I did only remove the one hammer, the pin is in the middle just ready to come through once the hammer 's in place.
Do you recall if the 16s use the short or long stirrup?
Thanks again.........

Hammer Stirrips

Can anyone tell me what length the hammer stirrup should be on a Sterly 16 frame. I removed a worn one from mine and told Jason Barden I thought it was the shorter one, he agreed. When I received the new one it was shorter than the one I removed. Has anybody replaced these that could answer this, an...

Re: school me on sterling worth checkering

I use Murphy's oil soap or a mild detergent (drop of dish soap in water), and scrub with a toothbrush. Brush out the soap with water on a brush or towel. Let it dry, and if the lines need it, run your tool through them and true em up. Last, brush a light coat of Dembart's checkering oil on them, blo...

Re: school me on sterling worth checkering

Hi Falo, I have 3 Sterlys and they're all flat top cut from the factory. I've recut 2 of them. I don't have a flat top cutter, instead I cut the lines shallow with a 60 degree making sure all lines plus borders are present. Then I'll take a piece of 320 paper, wrap it around a flat eraser and sand t...

Re: Minnesota Hunt

This picture is exciting to look at. My Philly 16 is a week away from a fresh refinish and being put back together, just waiting on a hammer stirrup. Our quail opener is Oct. 3rd and I'll be ready here in the Arizona desert. Hopefully I'll learn how to post my photos by then. Great looking dog, I ha...

Re: Which finish is best?

Bobby, I can't remember the posting, but that stock you cut and fit sure looked nice. It may have been that semi-pistol grip 16 SW. I'll post a pic of my 16 when it's done, maybe 1-2 weeks.

Re: Which finish is best?

Bobby, we scrapped the Dembart's idea and lightly hit it with steel wool, then sprayed 3 coats of Hunter's Satin spray finish from Gun Savr. The Dembart finish looked good but started feeling a little tacky. This other finish dries fast, sometimes we get 3 coats a day in this Arizona heat. The 16 is...

Re: 2 1/2 vs 2 3/4 shell?

Vernal, it sounds like you have the winning combination with those loads of yours. The 28 is a great round and at 3/4 ounce will bot string out, great ballistics. I shoot the 1 ounce 16 for quail with a MOD and IC set barrel combo. If they get away it's my fault, not the gun or the load. I know what...

Re: 2 1/2 vs 2 3/4 shell?

Vernal, you're a genius! Should I also crimp the shell at 2 inches? Read your McIntosh "More Shotguns and Shooting", chapter 7, "Shot Stringing". Pages 59 and 60 highlight on the point I was trying to get across. I say load and shoot what works best for you and don't worry what o...

Re: 2 1/2 vs 2 3/4 shell?

Vernal, I'm going to side with Mike and "McIntosh" on this one. I think focus is the key factor here. Like golf, it's not the club that wins the game, it's the person swinging it. I'll be the first to admit my bad days out weigh my good days in the field. I took McIntosh's tip or advice an...

Re: 2 1/2 vs 2 3/4 shell?

I probably made a contradictive statement earlier by saying "less is better". I think Mike is on to what I was saying. I was saying it throws a more concentrative pattern with less shot. I don't shoot targets or competitively like Silvers, so I'm no authority. I do know when shooting my li...

Re: 16 Sterlingworth hard to open...

I reload the black Remington hulls for my Sterly 16 and have never had a problem. I do use Remington primers and load on a Mec Jr. I've only had issues using the Win 209 primers in my Sterly 12 loads. Normally it won't give me trouble opening unless I fire both barrels. I use the AAs and Rem STSs fo...
