Re: Grade comparison question

I would say C based upon price and level of engraving. Still regret selling my 3E 12 ga cir. 1907... It was immaculate.

Re: Lightning Bolts

I was unsure of my recollection of early LCS higher grades as pictured in Brophy’s book book which I have but somewhere in a box at the moment... but yes, they had them as others as have noted.. The geometry of these are in such contrast to the arcs and scrolls that I’m thinking there must be symbol...

Lightning Bolts

Hello, I did a search here on the forum and elsewhere on the web and couldn’t find the meaning or symbology that the gold ‘lightning bolts’ as found on some of the FE barrels represent... I’ve observed several different styles but all seem to be generally of the same design of a single ‘bolt’ and ve...

Orignial DE?

Hello, An interesting DE 12 gauge has come up for sale on GI in that it has something I have never seen before on an original Fox - a screw vs. a 'pin' serving as the sear pin. I'm in no way connected to this gun and hopefully, I haven't violated any posting rules.. Has anyone else ever seen this on...

Re: Diagram discribing parts/areas of a SxS

Shotguns and Shooting by Michael McIntosh has an excellent chapter dedicated to anatomy & terminology (with diagrams) and is still reasonably priced and available. Shotgun Technicana by McIntosh & Trevallian is also a great reference and in its own right, become coveted double gun literature...

Re: Questions about original SW finishes

Thanks Vince. May give that a try or go to a fine wet sand. As for your colors, you definitely got something back. I have a Sterlingworth with what I would call 80% original colors remaining and although muted, will leave them and enjoy what is left however am intrigued by your experiment!

Re: Questions about original SW finishes

Marsh- happens to be fresh in my mind... Got a Fox back after a long saga of "restoration" and it came back with its triggers polished to a mirror finish. Almost look chromed. Stil have not figured out how to get them back right. Hit them with very fine steel wool and didn't do a thing.

Re: Questions about original SW finishes

Vince, I don't believe Sterlingworth (perhaps even some of the graded Fox's) had nitre blued triggers. I think they were essentially left 'in the white'. It's common however, to se refinished guns with blueD triggers. Someone may come by and correct me here... On the stock finish, I would guess at t...

Re: Philly Sterlingworth straight grip trigger guard tang

Maybe a picture showing the guard strap of one of the 12 ga S&UG guns will surface. On page 276 of McIntosh'sbook, a 20- ga SPE S&UG gun is pictured lying on its left side and it kind of looks like it has a long guard but hard to tell due to angle and lighting. The screw about an inch behind...

Re: Philly Sterlingworth straight grip trigger guard tang

Bobby - thanks for the reply and info. I guess I should have known that... had it in my mind that a 'standard' Sterlingworth could be ordered with a straight grip but not the case? I was able to find a pic of a skeet and upland with the short and straightened tang. Thanks again for the info!

Philly Sterlingworth straight grip trigger guard tang

Hello, I've looked high and low for a high res photo of an original Sterlingworth sporting a straight grip that actually shows the entire trigger guard and long tang. If I have missed a photo on this website or another I would really appreciate a pointer to it. Also, if someone reading this owns suc...

Re: Fox 16 gauge A grade questions.

Very nice A grade Grouser. How long are the barrels? How much drop in the stock? I wouldn't necessaryily call .033 "extra full" rather just 'full' and not a bad choke combination (m/f) on 28" or longer bbls. Fox choke taperes tend to be very long and opening them up can certainly shor...
