Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

The quality did go down once Savage purchased Fox. What year did that occur? Of course, if this shotgun is of parts manufactured in Philadelphia, then the only difference is the location on the barrel. But this was news to me and I learned this about my Fox Sterlingworth on this forum, and it cause...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Orpington, What is your concern about Savage/Utica vs. Philly gun? As Researcher said that gun is all Philly components. Possibly a gun that was all ready serial numbered and in the white when Savage purchased Fox. Hard to say for sure. I would not rely on the Lightner published serial number chron...

Will be headed down tomorrow. Should be fantastic weather. Folks bring your checkbook or large piggy banks, there will be lot of Foxes there for sale. Probably more then ever seen at one time. PS. Great steak and BBQ down there as well.

Re: A Fox Dilemma

Might be able to polish out those bores with 0000 steel wool wrapped around a shotgun cleaning rod with a brass 20 gauge brush at the end. Spray the 0000 steel wool wrapped brush with CLP and put the rod in a battery operated drill and give it a go. Csn clean a lotta stuff out of a barrel doing the ...

Stan please post those pics. All of us have a well worn Sterly somewhere that is truly a shooter grade that needs a bit of Stock enhancement, if nothing more then protecting the wood from rain and such.

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Opinions will vary, but I suspect that $2,000 would be the max. I agree. I wonder why 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth shotguns haven’t experienced much of a value increase as compared to other firearms? I think their value has not dropped much if at all. Even in the 20 gauge condition counts and that pa...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

As far as a new bead sight, which one replaces factory original? Perhaps a link would be appropriate. There are many sizes and styles available. It appears your gun has been drilled and tapped for the Bradley bead that is on it. I think your gunsmith can pull that Bradly off and determine what the ...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

No one has said anything about valuation. Any guesses? What I had it for sale at on a few forums doesn’t really matter as it wasn’t for sale long and I didn’t have it for sale at a bargain price, and yet it’s hard to believe a 20 gauge Sterlingworth with only a bit of a challenge to the wood can’t ...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Where would you obtain the proper brass bead and how difficult are they to install? What affixes the old one to the barrel? Is it threaded? Most any competent gunsmith can replace that front sight with a correct brass bead. Those are threaded. I think that is a Bradley bead, but could be wrong.

Jason should have what you need. They will need to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.

orpington wrote: Fri Apr 19, 2024 5:33 pm With regards to this possibly being 1928 production and not shipping until 1933, was the 5 year lag time a consequence of the Great Depression?
I think some serial number frames were found probably in some dark corner storage bin after the fact and therefore they were put out later in production.

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

The pluses of this gun outweigh the negatives IMO. It might have 2 3/4" chambers that are factory and thus off the shelf light loads will be fine. No concern about finding short chambered ammo or reloading your own. That's a big deal right now with short chambered ammo being hard to find. Condi...
