Re: Once upon a time….

Once upon a time I had a duck dog. Kelly was a 65 lb. chocolate lab with a great nose and tons of enthusiasm. Probably a little too much enthusiasm, hence the leash. Too bad I didn’t have the insight or wherewithal for thorough training. Still, she found a lot of ducks that I would have lost. Good ...

Re: Barrel roll stamps

i have always heard Hossford is highly regarded in vintage shotgun barrel work. i understand repairing dent vs bulge are very different animals. i think shooters in northeast have more opportunities and resources to meet, shake hands, and cultivate relationships . i called mrHossford about bulge re...

Believe he only has the early ones. Here is a set he marked for me:

Re: Ducks

Jeff. When I was duck hunting we used marshgrass that came in 40 foot rolls. We anchored that to marine grade plywood that we built a frame around using 2 inch PVC pipe that was secured to the plywood with fasteners. Used monster zip ties to hold the grass in place. Held up for about 4 years before...

Re: First Fox

IMO those are pretty thin. I would want to know where exactly they are that thin. If it's before where the choke constriction starts I would not be concerned. If it's 10 from the breech I would be more concerned. I am guessing that gun might have 4 weight barrels and they can be pretty darn thin.

Re: 2024 Vintage Cup

I believe the rather late change in venue this year coupled with lackluster sales at last year's Vintage Cup has lead to decreased vendor participation. Timing also has something to do with it. Early Oct is the opening day for many early waterfowl seasons, plus opening of Grouse/Woodcock season in m...

Re: Hunting Season(s) Approaching - What gun(s) will go with you for opening day?

There will 2 Fox 20 gauge upgraded Sterlys going on the first hunt this year. That will likely be the last 10 days of October in the upper lower of Michigan. One of those Sterlys will be my meat gun which has 26" barrels. The second will hopefully be the gun currently being upgraded to a custom...

Kevin, I think is sold for around 5k, not counting the BP.

Re: Miss Mollie at 9 months

I should know this Tom but what's the difference between the Red setter and the Irish setter? I think Annie is a keeper. Pretty much the same thing. AKC calls them Irish Setters. FDSB calls them Red Setters. Annie is dual registered. The AKC registration says Irish Setter. The FDSB paperwork calls ...

Re: Miss Mollie at 9 months

Time flies. Got Annie Spayed last week because she is now 18 months old. No desire for puppies. FWIW, there are more well breed Red Setters out there then there has ever been. Lots of outstanding breeders putting out excellent dogs with style and speed.

Re: Fox 20

Put me in the camp of the Savage made Sterlys early in the production when they were still using Philly made splinter forearms and capped pistol grips. Most of those were made with 2 3/4" chambers, but some weren't. Worth checking that out before laying down the cash. I also think more of the S...

Re: Nice little Michigan Grouse Gun

I was the first owner of this gun. Bought it in Front Royal Va where it was mis marked as a Sterlingworth because it had the snap on Forearm and the early engraving. PS. Bought it about 15 years ago give or take. Was my first graded Fox and I killed the first Grouse I ever shot at it with in Maine. ...

Re: Project from Hell

Same guy has had my Lefever thumb pusher since I bought it at our Northern SxS. It was in my possession for maybe 10 minutes. It too has been at least 6 years. It’s a repair, not even a customization. I stopped asking about it. Have a feeling your gun can be picked up at the shop in Pa. I doubt ser...

Re: Progress on a Grouse/Woodcock Gun 20 gauge

Well, crap. Another issue popped up. Barrels were re-roll stamped by John Josford and returned to Matthew for blueing. During the blueing process, leaks were discovered in the bottom rib, so it needs to be relayed a minimum. Top rib may have to be done as well. We will get there, but another delay a...
