Re: The Season Almost Over
I have hunted Pa SGL's quite a 7 times. Only got into birds 3 times and took at total of 2 shots. One bird stoned and the other hit the ground with a broken wing and headed into a cluster of swamps and briers. Dogs went in twice looking for it and I finally called them off after 15 minutes as they w...

Re: Hunting for Woodcock
Good job Roger. I have hunted south central PA WMAs more then a few times and have not put up a Woodcock yet. I finally hit a VA WMA this past week and put up one bird. It flew 3 times and yet no flush was over 8 feet off the ground the entire time. Tired flight bird imo. Coupled with the drought in...

Annie's first pheasant in Pa.
Did well. Sorry for the lousy Pic. Hunters everywhere. Lots of dogs and a bit crazy. She pointed 4 birds, but only got a shot at one. Still a good start for her.
PS. She may handle Pheasants better then Sophie. Time will tell.

Re: Annie at trainer
Sorry to hear about your buddy’s wife. I’m sure you’ll do well in your area, but the trip is half the fun. Agree 100 percent Jeff. This is the first time I have missed Michigan in 7 years. I love it up there. Young Annie most likely would have had more bird contacts in one week there then she would...

Re: Annie at trainer
Pic her up next Wednesday. Sadly my trip to Michigan won't happen. My hunting buddies wife has had some health issues just surfaced and we had to cancel. My plans are to start hunting PA in Mid October once the Woodcock season opens.

Re: How do you warm up for bird season?
5 Stand at the local Isaak Walton. I shoot only sxs and low gun. If its not crowded I have the puller deviate from when I call for the bird for up to 3 seconds before launching the bird. I break about half normally. I shoot 50 rounds every other Saturday. That's enough to where I don't lose focus an...

Re: $50 flea market early Fox A Grade shotgun
It appears to be an A-Grade from 1907, but it appears to have been restocked by Savage at some time. Does that kill the value? How do you find a value on a mix matched firearm? Yes, it hurts the value, but the reality is that particular grade of gun in that condition even if it had the original sto...

Re: Once upon a time….
Once upon a time I had a duck dog. Kelly was a 65 lb. chocolate lab with a great nose and tons of enthusiasm. Probably a little too much enthusiasm, hence the leash. Too bad I didn’t have the insight or wherewithal for thorough training. Still, she found a lot of ducks that I would have lost. Good ...

Re: Barrel roll stamps
i have always heard Hossford is highly regarded in vintage shotgun barrel work. i understand repairing dent vs bulge are very different animals. i think shooters in northeast have more opportunities and resources to meet, shake hands, and cultivate relationships . i called mrHossford about bulge re...

Believe he only has the early ones. Here is a set he marked for me:Researcher wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 8:15 pm Are the roll-stamps John has A.H. Fox Gun Co., Savage or both. Mitzie obviously had roll-stamps to mark barrels as being A.H. Fox Gun Co. Chromox barrels --

Re: Ducks
Jeff. When I was duck hunting we used marshgrass that came in 40 foot rolls. We anchored that to marine grade plywood that we built a frame around using 2 inch PVC pipe that was secured to the plywood with fasteners. Used monster zip ties to hold the grass in place. Held up for about 4 years before...
