Re: Not so technical question - butt pad screw plugs

Have you considered putting a leather facing on the pad? It would solve two problems at once, that of the plugs backing out and also of them being a different color than the pad itself. Leather faced Silvers pads were not uncommon in the era. I have done one on a hunting SWE, and love it.

Re: 12 Gauge Double Barrel AH Fox Shotgun

I'm on my brand new iMac desktop and it wants me to download the pics. I ain't doing that. I had to have Apple do a data migration from my old Mac to this one, which used up part of my new memory. I'm gonna move with caution about piling more downloads into it. If he would email me the pics I'd be g...

If you want to use a good double-gunsmith within "driving distance" contact Gunter Pfrommer in Rocky Mount, VA.

Re: Added Two New Foxes to the Stable

Those are very well done. They captured the "live look" on the faces of both of them. That takes talent. I especially like the grey on the stump.

Welcome to the AHFCA forum. Congratulations on acquiring your first Fox gun. I would strongly encourage you to consider becoming a member. Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Thanks Daryl. Yes, Japan Drier is sold in hardware and paint stores. A friend in MT taught me this finishing method and it was he that worked out the recipe with added Japan Drier. When in use we mix 1/4 tsp. of the two part finish with 1/2 tsp. mineral spirits. Then to that we add three-four drops ...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Here are a few pics I hastily snapped this afternoon. I failed to do it justice somehow, as the pics do not convey the depth of the finish. This is the thing that has so impressed me about this method ......... how it takes a plain piece of walnut, with little to no figure, and makes it look so plea...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

I agree with Craig. And further, with the o.p. who said his valuation would be higher with longer barrels. My 20 ga. Sterly Ejector with 28" barrels was bought for $1400. I just recently inletted a forend loop to strengthen the forend iron attachment, and refinished the wood, myself. I used the...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

I would get rid of the remains of the old finish before putting anything on it, Timberluxe or otherwise. A simple wipe down with acetone on paper towel will dissolve off all the old finish and leave it ready for a new finish, unless you need to raise dents. I would never rub a new finish over those ...

Re: What to do with this 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth?

Not refinishing the wood on a gun, when needed like this one is, is like never shineing a pair of shoes. Just let them age well and get raggedy looking. They’ll be “original “. People will look at them and say “Wow!”, those shoes are really ORIGINAL.

Re: Barrel part missing

The missing part you refer to is the cocking slide. Associated parts that you would need are a spring and a screw to hold it in place, assuming they are missing as well. Pretty common parts that I would assume to be available from Jason Barden at Pumpkin Mountain Gun Shop. Someone here also may have...

Re: Chamber wall thickness

I sent my 20 ga. Philadelphia Fox SWE to Dean Harris and had him lengthen the chambers to 2 3/4”, like yours is, about 5 years ago. I spoke with him before sending it to him and we talked about wall thicknesses before and after the work. I use 1 oz. factory loads in it, at 1155 fps, because that’s w...

Re: Colt 1878

If money were no object it would be cool to see what Turnbull could do with that gun. I've always had a fondness for Colt shotguns. They're just great Americana.
