Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

Thanks for the kind comments.

I would be open to doing an article but I did not take pictures in that context. Next time.

I am certainly open to giving any detail wanted though. Feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer.

Thanks again.

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

I did the checkering. I have been doing it now for a couple years but I have to say that Using Michael Ullman products took my efforts to another level. His carbide cutters are amazing and the see through handle is so ridgid and easy to work. Thanks Michael. The screw replacement turned out great bu...

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

The 12 GA is completely done.

All metals cleaned and lubricated, stock and forearm re-finished and checkering cleaned up. Duck season opens soon and I will be after some wood ducks with this ole gal.

The 20 ga is not too far behind.

Many thanks,

Blued versus CCH fox frame ?

Where any later 12 ga Savage Sterlingworth foxes factory blued in lieu of CCH? There is one more fox gun in that shop I may be interested in and it is marked on the barrels 2 3/4 chambers but the frame and FA metal are blued. At a quick glance it does not look like a re-blue but it could just be a g...

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

Should have the 20 GA to the same place as the 12 GA by end of next week. Got to go back to work. Man these vintage shotguns are a rabbit trail. It is easy to just get lost in it all for sure.

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

12 GA all cleaned up, reassembled and is just needing a little more wood finish. What a great learning experience. BTW you can put the sear spring in the gun upside down and actually fully assemble the rest of the gun and then only know something is wrong because the sears will not cock. I got the b...

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

Ok I got the 12 Ga fully disassembled but not with out incident. For three days I have been soaking and wrenching on the bottom plate screw and after a couple broken tips I resorted to gorilla tactics. I drilled out the screw. OH well it came out without any damage to anything else so not too bad. I...

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

Immediately after removing from the ultrasonic I air blast them dry and then soak in a an oil bath. A mineral spirits soak is good too. I never give the parts time to rust before oil soak. I have not had any issues so far but I have only been doing this for a couple years now. Also I usually do not ...

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

Both will get back in the field.

The 20ga on some S Ga quail and hopefully the 12 on some KS pheasant and ducks this winter.

I have to admit that I have become enamored with the fox shotguns. I am still an NID fan but the foxes are breathing down Ithaca's neck.

Re: New to me foxes (Sterlingworths)

12 ga The barrels are 28" and 3lb - 6oz so I guess this is a heavy 4 weight barrel 2 11/16" chambers R barrel bore is .727 Mod Choke ..703 starting at about 4 inches. So .024 constriction. L barrel bore is .726 Full Choke .685 starting at about 4 inches. So .041 constriction. Before cleani...
