Re: Opinions on truest case colors

IMO and its only that! This is the "oil and water" look of correctly done charcoal color case. You have to see this Fox in the flesh to ta appreciate the colors. This was done circa 2001 by Oscar Gaddy so its no longer available. Doug http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/foxcustom/Fox%20...

Re: 16 Sterly upgrade question

My understanding is toilet bowl cleaner does a wonderful job of removing case coloring using a extra fine brite pad. It will and I have used it where I was going to "French Gray" the receiver. HOWEVER, the stuff that I use is very fast and you have ZERO control of the amount of color that...

Re: 16 Sterly upgrade question

Doug, What did you use for the color removal? Also the sheen on the Fox stock is perfect. Any tips on how to achieve that? :) That is some fine work my friend! Bill, I used 0000 steel wool for the initial rough work if you can call it that. Then I used a Pearl Pink eraser for the final removal and ...

Re: 16 Sterly upgrade question

Doug, assuming you've had the parts annealed and you've done the action sculpting, shaping and polishing would you recommend the parts be re-case hardened after engraving? Alternatively, if the parts were never annealed, sculpting/polishing done and then engraved, would it be necessary to have the ...

Re: 16 Sterly upgrade question

You have received some excellent advise so far. However, if you plan on having engraving done please have the frame, top lever, trigger plate and forend iron annealed first. You will make your engraver much happier and if you plan on having any rebates, scallops, top lever shaping or bead work done ...

Re: Am I out of touch?

I did forget to mention the "4" stamped HARD on each barrel in case we might not notice that they were 4 weight barrels. I've handled a few, not many, Foxes with 4 wgt barrels and they had no weight marking left so I have no idea what the font is for a true Fox stamp. Also, this gun was a ...

Am I out of touch?

Last Sunday I attended an auction that had an A grade 20 gauge with 26" barrels up for bid. The on-line pictures of the gun showed what appeared to be an original finish, high condition gun. The auction description also stated that the gun had "special order checkering". I suppose tha...

Re: Early Fox 20 ga

Bill, I think its going to be a repro Hawkins because that's what I have that sort've matches what was already on it. It does not have a Silvers so I'm guessing that the current pad was installed after purchase.

Early Fox 20 ga

Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing an early Fox CE 20 ga two barrel set gun. The serial number on the gun is 2003xx and it does have two snap-on forends. Both sets of barrels are numbered to the gun and I have every reason to believe that they are original from the factory. This Fox has a few m...

Re: OK what should I do ?

Thank you all for your input. I didn't know that this topic would end up being as interesting as it became. I hope this doesn't come across as a "cop out" but I'm going to do the plug solution. If I ever want to reverse my decision it will be much easier to undo and I have the parts to mak...

Re: OK what should I do ?

Original Fox guns built without a safety had a plug in the safety slot and any engraving would just cross the plug like it wasn't there. The safety position detents were also milled in the underside of the top strap as well on Fox Guns built without a safety . UncleTom, If this is true and I have n...

Re: OK what should I do ?

Thanks Frank! That makes perfect sense to me. I guess I'll fire up my TIG welder when I get the action back from annealing after my Reno adventure. :)

Re: OK what should I do ?

TB, The problem with a Callahan letter is that this Fox is to early. I don't believe that there are any existing records these early guns.

Re: OK what should I do ?

Thanks to all of you for your replies! I bought this gun to use as a target gun so the idea of welding up the slot as a safety issue is not a problem. I have other shotguns for field use as most of us here do. I do wonder if, in the future, I wanted to sell the gun would it be worth less money to a ...

OK what should I do ?

Some of you may remember that about a year ago I purchased an early (serial # 7647) C grade Fox two barrel set. The gun is in excellent condition with crisp engraving except that some dufus thought it would be nice to hot blue the frame. I've decided to have the frame re-color cased so that it looks...
