Re: Critical Review
Sorry guys. I didn't mean to start a p....ing contest. I guess I missed the "best gun" concept. I am certainly NOT qualified to judge the merit of a gun's design. It was interesting to read the comments even though I am not familiar with some of the guns he mentions. It would be fun, I thi...

Re: Critical Review
Certainly is interesting reading. Strangely, he doesn't mention several popular guns: the Nitro Special for one, and the several Savage/Stephens doubles including the current offerings. He also doesn't mention any of the turn-of-the-century SxS's. But I'll start to look around for an H&R!

Re: McIntosh
Take a look at the "Fieldsport" Site and check out the Used Guns section. I think you will find the gun you are asking about is listed there. Brian Belinski owns Fieldsport and was a good friend of McIntosh. If the site doesn't answer your question, give Mr. Belinski a call. I'm sure he wi...

Re: stock finish on 1910 A Grade
Sorry guys. My brain went on holiday. I forgot that this was a "Fox" site and that my barrel orientation comment was inappropriate here. I apologize and hope you will forgive me. I'm an old guy and mild confusion is annoying when you goof! By the way; the dog hasn't seen a stack barrel in ...

Re: stock finish on 1910 A Grade
Sorry if I confused you with BLO. It's just easier to type than"Boiled Linseed Oil'. And SW is short for "Sterlingworth" for the same reason. I'll just add that those old SW stocks looked like they were originally varnished and I was a bit surprised that the oil worked so well. These ...

Re: stock finish on 1910 A Grade
I qualify as a"rank amateur" but here is what I did to a couple of SW's with spots of worn-off finish. My philosophy was "if it doesn't work, I'll just strip and refinish." I really cleaned the stock and got all the old dirt and crud off. Then I cleaned it again. This gave me a g...

Re: Ejector 20 Sterly brush gun
Thanks to Researcher for explaining the SW terminology for me. I certainly appreciate it. I have a 12 and a 20, both with 28" barrels. They are pretty much the only guns I shoot any more. The 20 ga. is a joy to carry in the field as it is right at 6 lbs.

Re: Ejector 20 Sterly brush gun
I'm not sure that I understand the term SW "Brush Gun". Is it labeled that way or is it a reference to chokes or barrel length? As far as value is concerned, my thumb rule is to add $500-$600 to the price of a similar 12 ga. SW in like condition. This generally puts you in the $2000 range,...

Re: Disapointed with screws
I cannot imagine that a "reputable gunsmith" would bugger-up any screw! If you take money to work on guns, you do not return them damaged.

Re: Tinting Acraglass Gel
Not sure why you want to use Accraglass if you are down to bare wood? Why not Titebond III and clamps? If clamping is a problem due to irregular shapes, try using surgical tubing to wrap the area very tight. Make sure "patch " is considerably oversize so that you can work it down to perfec...

Re: How much restoration makes sense?
Looks to me like a DIY job, at least for your purposes. Clean up the metal with OOOO steel wool and if you don't like the patina hit with some Oxpho Blue. Stock repair is pretty straight forward if you have any woodworking experience. Then strip and refinish. What you do with the checkering is up to...

Re: Safe pressure?
Reading all this, and disregarding the personal invective; does this mean that modern 2 3/4" loads with plastic shot cups have lower pressures than similar loads from the 1920's and30's? Please note that I am not an engineer and have no technical education. I am an old guy who grew up with the ...

Re: Stock Finish on SW's?
Thanks for the info. The Duco makes sense from the remnants I removed. I'll just keep rubbing in the BLO. That old wood keeps soaking it up and it looks great as well.

Stock Finish on SW's?
Wondering what kind of factory finish was used on SW stocks. I have late Philly 20 ga and early Utica 12 ga. Touched up a couple of minor stock scrapes with BLO and they completely disappeared! I was surprised because there were a few residual areas around the wrists that had obvious varnish-like co...
