woodcock are polite enough to hold for the dog and twitter up in front of you-they may go for the tops or cork screw the saplings - i almost always see a woodcock fold Grouse explode when they feel ready (and when you are not)- in front - to the side - behind, in a thunderous flush - just swing thro...

but he does say 144 FLUSHES not birds - if you figure 2 to 3 flushes per bird following up on initial contacts

that is still around 20 individual birds a day - grand hunting in anyone's book any day

had the new pup out for a couple short runs

the covers are still quite thick with leaves and its been warm - mid 60's and dry -
so no sightings of the mythical bird yet

Nice looking pup for sure. Great about the retrieving. Lots of setters out there don't have much love for that these days. PS. Is Tweed a English setter or a Llew? He looks a lot like some of the Llew's I see out of New Mexico from Jornada Kennels. Well I would argue a Llewellin is an English sette...

graduation day

of sorts Grouse and woodcock open next Thursday - it has been a slow summer for training - hot and dry, and the shooting preserve i used to belong to to train dogs went out of business and for some reason there has been no pigeons available to trap around here. Even the grain elevators down the road...

still have the one my grandfather gave me a little weak in the spring -now the only injury to anyone i remember was a kid from up in the hollow- he somehow fired his BB gun while he had his hand over the muzzle - he never told his parents. I remember him sitting on the school bus long after it heale...
