Re: Fox's 5th grouse of the season

You and Bella are very good or very lucky. I haven't flushed a grouse in Butler, Lawrence or Crawford Counties in 3 years and I spend a bunch of time afield. Sure do miss the drumming in the spring.

Re: Seeking Advice on a Fox Gun For Me & My Dogs

Open chokes are not too common on older doubles (Fox included), but I suppose you know that. If the gun fits then by all means get it. It would also be good to warn you that later on you will also be interested in a 28" gun probably in 16 gauge with at least one tight choke for pheasant. Value ...

Re: Custom Sterly

That's interesting. Did the instructor tell you what the slag is composed of? I would guess it's carbon of some sort. Possibly some oil in the red stuff.

Re: Sporting Clays

Myself and my oldest son are usually the only ones I see shooting low gun. My purpose is to maintain a consistent gun mount for the field. My son does it just because the old man does it that way. It does work. Many times it has been mentioned by guys that occasionally hunt with us that we are on th...

Re: The Sterlingworth finally showed up!

Save your money on the safety rod. Each of them is a slightly different length. You can make it out of a 6 or 8d finish nail, just mild steel. Where the safety rod goes through the stock you'll often see a crack develop on the outside of the stock due to wood removal of the interior hole. Best of lu...

Re: The Sterlingworth finally showed up!

Maybe it's the angle of the picture but I can't see the trip pin, just looks like an empty hole in the photo. Good project gun. Are you in a class for gunsmiths or machinists?

Re: The Sterlingworth finally showed up!

The trigger plate screw is an incorrect replacement and that in itself can cause you some problems. When you remove the trigger plate there will be a small spring underneath that fits in a hole in the action, it is easily lost, without that spring the top lever won't stay in the open position ( just...

It's definitely not for everybody. Someone who marches to the beat of a different drummer might like it.

Re: Bad news for PA grouse hunters

We flushed at least a dozen birds on deer drives(rifle season) until about 10 years ago. Have not flushed a one in the past 2 seasons. Spring drumming used to be common. I haven't heard any in the past year. If the Game Commission didn't stock pheasants I'd unload some of my upland guns. The turkey ...

Re: Sterlingworth safety slide version

In the Sterlingworth Co. pictures, the third one down would show the correct style safety. If the gun is less than 90% condition I wouldn't be concerned about which style to replace it with. Personally I prefer the Savage style, but that's just me.

Re: Auto safety rod

Phil, An 8 or 10d finish nail cut down to the correct length is ideal for a safety rod application. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the length right but finish nails are inexpensive. I think on average it takes me 2 or 3 tries to get exactly what I want. Each one I've made is an individual ...
